How You Could Be Accidentally Wasting Energy at Home

If your energy bills are steadily increasing, you might be doing things that actually waste power without even realizing it. Check out these ways that you could be accidentally wasting energy at your Sarasota, Florida, home.

Using the Wrong Appliance

When you want to warm up leftovers or heat up a single-serve pizza, don’t power up the oven to 400 degrees to do so. For small jobs like these, think about how you could lessen your energy usage by using smaller appliances, like the toaster oven or microwave.

When to Wash Clothes

Doing the laundry is a chore that you can’t avoid, but you don’t have to waste energy on each load. If you wash a lot of your loads during the hottest times of the day, you could be using twice as much energy as you would if you changed your schedule to fit in this chore at other times. When outdoor temperatures are high, try to launder clothes as early in the morning or late in the evening as possible when it’s cooler. You can also reduce energy waste by only doing full loads of laundry instead of throwing in a few things here and there.

Overdoing It With the AC

Your air conditioner uses a lot of energy. Here in Sarasota, it gets hot and humid during the summer months, but you can combat the heat in other ways. Try using fans to move air around, keep cool in the swimming pool, or apply a cool towel to your neck. Drink lots of cold water, which not only helps to keep you cool but also keeps you hydrated.

Leaving Appliances on or Plugged In

Falling asleep with the TV on and leaving your laptop plugged in all the time are both major energy wasters. Unplug your laptop when it’s fully charged and set a TV sleep timer if you like falling asleep with background noise.
