Zoning Systems Give You More Power Over Temperature Control
Most heating and cooling systems run on a traditional single-zone system. Unless your home is relatively new or remodeled, this is probably the case with yours. Unfortunately, it’s not the most efficient way to heat and cool your home, especially if your home is multi-storied or has unique architectural features that keep one area of the home hotter or cooler than others.
A zoning system will save on utility expenses, and it allows you more power over temperature control. Your HVAC system can be upgraded to include a zoning system, or you can add it when you’re ready for a heating/cooling system replacement. Speak to a licensed HVAC contractor about whether a zoning system would be a cost-saving addition to your home.
Zoning Systems Work for Homes That Have the Following:
- Multiple stories. As you are aware, heat rises. This can make the upper levels of a home uncomfortably warm in all seasons, regardless of what the single thermostat says. Zoning systems allow you to create different zones for different levels, or wings, of the home. These can be shut off completely from the main house if not in use, or will keep occupants comfortable upstairs and down, year-round.
- You have unique architectural features. Those wall-to-wall and ceiling-to-floor windows may provide a gorgeous view of the sunset, but most likely they contribute to significant solar heat gain, which keeps that room hot in the summertime. Or, perhaps you have a room or two with vaulted ceilings, which make it harder to maintain a consistent temperature. Your zoning system will accommodate for these unique spaces so their climates can be controlled regardless of the temperature in the rest of the home.
- Some people like it cooler than others. It’s inevitable that some family member like things warmer or cooler than others. If this is the case in your family, you can put individual bedrooms or living areas on their own zones so those occupants can maintain the climate that’s most comfortable for them.
